Incidence :  About 20% of all women have UTI during life time.

Why UTI common in female : 

  1. Short Urethra. (4cm)
  2. Close proximity of the external urethral meatus to the vagina and vulva that are contaminated.
  3. Sexual activity: Sexual active women tend to have more UTIs than do women who aren’t sexually active. Having a new sex partner also increase your risk.
  4. Certain type of birth control
  5. Catheterization.

Common Organism of UTI :

  1. Escheriachia Coli.
  2. Proteus.
  3. Klebsiella.
  4. Pseudomonas.
  5. Enterobacter.
  6. Enterococci.
  7. Staphylococcus saprophyticus
  8. Staphylococcus aureus.

Clinical Features of Urinary tract infection.

  1. Burning sensation during micturation.
  2. Suprapubic discomfort and tenderness.
  3. Urine may be cloudy or foul smelling
  4. Dysuria and pyuria
  5. Haematuria.
  6. Urinary Incontinence
  7. Rigors
  8. Pyrexia
  9. Nausea and vomiting.

Investigation of UTI.

  1. Blood for Complete blood count.
  2. Urine R/M/E and C/S
  3. Plain x-ray of KUB region.
  4. USG of KUB region.
  5. Cystoscopy.

Treatment of UTI.

A. Supporative treatment:

  1. Diet: Normal diet with plenty of fluid intake.
  2. Frequent emptying of bladder
  3. Maintenance of personal Hygiene.
  4. If high rise of temperature : Tepid sponging all over the body.

B. Specific Treatment :

  1. Broad spectrum antibiotics according to culture sensitivity report:
  •                 Ciprofloxacin
  •                         or
  •                  Cefuroxime
  •                         or
  •                  Ampicillin
