Define Sexual transmitted disease : The sexual transmitted disease are a group of communicable disease caused by a wide range of bacterial, viral, protozoal and fungal infection transfrerred predominantly through sexual contact.

Name  common  Sexually Transmitted disease with casusative agents :

A. Bacterial : 

  • Gonorrhoea : Neisseria gonorrhoea.
  • Non – gonococcal urethritis : Chlamydia trachomatis (D – K serotypes)
  • Syphilis : Treponema pallidum
  • Lymphogranuloma venereum : Chlamydia trachomatis ( L Serotypes.)
  • Chancroid : Haemophilus ducreyi.
  • Granuloma inguinale : Donovania granulomatis.
  • Non Specific vaginitis :  Haemophilus vaginalis.
  • Mycoplasma infection : Mycoplasma hominis.

B. Viral:

  • AIDS : Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and 2
  • Genital herpes : Herpes simplex virus (HSV 2)
  • Condyloma accuminata : Human papilloma virus  (HPV)
  • Molluscum contagiosum : HPV – 16,18 or 31
  • Viral hepatitis : Pox virus.
  • CIN : Hepatitis B and C virus.
  • Protozol
  • Bacterial vaginosis : Gardnerella vaginalis
  • Trichomonas vaginitis : Trichomonas vaginalis

C. Protozoal : 

  • Bacterial Vaginosis : Gardnerella vaginalis.

D. Fungal : 

  • Monilial vaginitis : Candida albicans.

E. Ectoparasite : 

  • Scabies : Sarcoptes Scabiei.
  • Pediculosis Pubis : Phthirus pubis (Crab louse).

  • Transplacental

Complication of sexually transmitted disease :

  • Acute pelvic inflammation
  • Chronic pelvic inflammation
  • Infertility
  • Ectopic Pregnancy
  • Dyspareunia
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Tubo – Ovarian mass.
  • Bartholin’s Gland abscess.
  • Urethritis and bartholinitis
  • Vulval elephantiasis.

Prevention of  Sexual disease :

  • Avoidance of multiple sexual partners.
  • Use of Condom
  • Avoidance of sharing of needles and syringes by intravenous drug users.
  • Education about the people on STDs their  nature, Modes of transmission and prevention.
  • Exclude the high – risk donors from donating blood. Body organs, sperms and other tissue.
  • All blood should be screened before transmission
  • Strict sterilization practices should be ensured in hospitals and clinics.
  • Disposable syringes and needles should be used.
