Symptoms  of Trichomonas vagintis :

For women :

• Sudden onset of purulent vaginal discharge – profuse or scanty. 
• Irritation and itching of introitus.
• Dysuria and frequency of micturattion
• Dyspareunia
• Per vaginal discharge– thin, cream- coloured and frothy
• Vulva is inflamed with evidences of pruritus.
• Vagina is tender, may be diffuse, fiery red in colour with multiple punctuate haemorrhagic spots giving the appearance of strawberry.
• The external urethral meatus is congested.

For men : 

• Itching inside the penis
• Burning after urination or ejaculation
• The urge to urinate frequently 
• Penile discharge

Investigation of Trichomoniasis :

For women : 

•  Vaginal and urethral swab M/E – Hanging drop preparation.
• Culture of the discharge in kupferberg’s or Feinberg, Whittington medium;

For men : 

• Urethral discharge can be examined under microscope to look for the parasite.

Treatment of Trichomoniasis: 

Of both partners :

A. Metronidazole : Adult – 1 tab tds for 7 days

Below 12 years half tab tds for 7 days.

Infants : 50 mg tds for 7 days.

Second course after 1 week interval gives better result.

 For first trimester of pregnancy : Intravaginal metronidazole 100 mg pessaries one per day for 7 days

B. Advice : 

• The partners should use condom during coitus until sex is cured.
• The partner should be given the same treatment simultaneously.
• Care in disposal of her underclothing.
• Keep her own bath towel in order to minimize the chance of infecting other members of the family.
