Define ovary: Ovary are 2 in numbers. The female gametes called oocyte are formed in them.

Describe the anatomy and physiology of ovary in short :

Morphology:

  •  Each gland is oval in shape and pinkish grey in colour and the surface is starred during reproductive period.
  • It measures about 3 cm in length, 2 cm  in breadth and 1 cm in thickness
  • Each ovary has two ends-tubal and uterine, two borders-mesovarium and free posterior and two surfaces-medial and lateral.

Structure:

  1. Cortex: Cortex consists of stroma cells. It contains a number of structures which are different periods of life.
  2. Medulla: The medulla consists of blood vessels nerves with a loosely packed fibrous stroma

Blood supply of Ovary :

  1. Arterial Supply: Is from the ovarian artery, a branch of the abdominal aorta.
  2. Venous drainage: Is through pampiniform plexus, to form the ovarian veins which drain into inferior vena cava on the right side and left renal vein on the left side.

Nerve supply of Ovary :

Sympathetic supply comes down along the Ovarian, artery form T10 segment.

Development of overy:

The different parts of ovary develop from the following sources:

  • Oocyte : From primordial germ cells.
  • Primordial follicle: From cells of sex cords, which come from coelomic epithelium.
  • Interstitial cells: From mesemchymae.

Physiology of ovary :

The ovaries are paired sex gland or gonads in female which are concerned with:

  1. Germ cell maturation, storage and its release.
  2. Steroidogenesis.
